The Setting:
Our 3 day mid-week program is run out of the Salt Spring Island Baptist Church, a sweet haven known a century ago as Sanctuary Woods. The staff there have been incredible partners in offering us extensive indoor and outdoor facilities to maximize the kids’ experience in all seasons. This year we are also developing a sweet forest space for immersive play and outdoor learning. Contact Gigi if you would like to schedule a tour!
The Curriculum:
At Sanctuary Woods we gather for hands-on learning adventures in our own unique Summerhill / Sudbury Valley style.
This year will feature:
Spanish, Art, and Dance with Isa
Master storytelling, song, games, film-making, drawing, and indigenous studies with Theo.
Culture, history, science, creative math, and project-based learning with Gigi.
The offerings and activities that our guides bring forward are curated to help children grow in the core competencies of:
Confidence
Communication
Creativity
Community
These interconnected goals are cultivated through a fluid set of rhythms and practices. Community is consciously created and supported through our gathering and closing circles, town hall meetings, collaborative leadership model, and the daily curriculum of living compassion. New communication skills are introduced early and often so that kids feel equipped with a diversity of mediums they can use to express themselves. Authentic voice, reflection, and inner knowing are encouraged through creative inquiry, maker space afternoons and child-led projects. Creativity is the living currency of our ecosystem, dynamically paired with the confidence to take risks, navigate challenges, and bring ideas to completion. How to brainstorm, plan, and execute a project is always on the curriculum. Students sparking their own initiatives is normal at Wildhaven!
